About

How it started

A Familiar Face started with a simple idea: that everyone deserves someone they can trust to check in, lend a hand, and treat them like a person, not a task on a list.

Founder

Sarah Denniss

Hi, I’m Sarah, I started A Familiar Face because I wanted to do something that truly mattered.

I’ve always loved spending time with older people; they’ve lived so much, and there’s a real richness in the stories, wisdom and experience they carry if you just take the time to sit and listen. For me, it’s a privilege, not a chore.

Loneliness is a real and growing problem, and there’s good evidence that staying connected, having company, and taking part in things like conversation, hobbies, or a bit of gentle activity genuinely support our wellbeing as we get older. A cup of tea and a proper chat can do more good than people realise.

That’s what A Familiar Face is really about, making sure the people I visit feel seen, valued and a little less alone. When you trust me with someone you love, I don’t take that lightly. I treat every visit the way I’d want someone to treat my own family.

A message from our founder

I’m Sarah.

I haven’t come from a professional care background; my working life has taken a few different turns. I’ve been a Teacher, a Copywriter, a Social Media Account Manager; I’ve worked in shops, been a tour guide and a few things in between. But alongside all of that, I’ve spent years caring for my own grandparents and, more recently, my dad as he’s gotten older. So this isn’t new to me; I know what it’s like to sit with someone, help them through their day, and want the very best for them, because I’ve lived it with my own family.

I’m also an empath, through and through. When I see an older person finding things hard, carrying shopping alone, sitting quietly with no one to talk to, or just looking a bit lost,  it genuinely stays with me. I’ve always wanted to do something about that feeling, rather than just notice it and walk on.

A Familiar Face grew out of that. It’s not a job I fell into; it’s something I chose because I believe everyone deserves company, kindness, and a bit of help when they need it, especially in the later years of life. And because I’ve cared for my own family this way, you can trust that I’ll treat yours the same.

I set up A Familiar Face because I know how much it matters to have someone reliable and kind involved when family can’t always be there, whether that’s because of distance, work, parenting responsibilities or simply not enough hours in the day. My goal is for every visit to feel less like a service and more like a friend popping round.

When you welcome me into your home, you’re not getting a stranger in a uniform. You’re getting a familiar face,  someone who remembers how you take your tea, what’s on at the local community hall this week challenges you to a game of scrabble and wants to know how your week has really been.
